Dortmund

Digital Logistics

Outdated – or as they say in Germany, olle Kamelle? No, because Dortmund is so much more than just Germany's erstwhile most important industrial city. Companies are now being ushered into a new, digital age here. With a comprehensive ecosystem and in cooperation with innovative start-ups, the Digital Hub Logistics is facilitating the transformation process for SMEs.

The Digital Hub Logistics in Dortmund is driving digitisation within the logistics sector and beyond. Assistance is increasingly being given to SMEs that are characterised by an innovative spirit and are developing new business models with promising digital products. To this end, initiatives such as the Start-in Factory are run via the Hub. In this particular programme, coaches work alongside companies and innovation teams on the next steps along the path towards the digital transformation. In addition, the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) makes it possible to develop and test new products under realistic conditions. This leads to the creation of new solutions that best meet the needs of the individual companies. Furthermore, with events such as the Digital Logistics Award and a comprehensive ecosystem, the Hub provides opportunities to network within the logistics sector.

BEULCO

BEULCO manufactures products involved in the supply of water and the protection of drinking water. The company’s start-in, iQ water solutions, is working alongside the Fraunhofer Institute to digitise the networking of drinking water supply points. iQ water solutions provides network optimisation and management services for water suppliers and end customers. The Hub’s innovation coaches use their knowledge to help the company make digital progress.

Motion.miners

The Dortmund-based start-up MotionMiners equips warehouse workers with mobile sensors and mini radio transmitters to record motion processes. The obtained data can be used to determine efficiency KPIs and optimisation potential as well as examine ergonomics. It cooperates with the established medium-sized company Meta Regalbau. MotionMiners was able to launch its first pilot project in the SME sector here, while Meta in turn was able to mechanise its shelves and thus move forward with its digitisation plans.

Digital Logistics Award

The Digital Logistics Award looks for innovative digital logistics solutions in various industries. The finalists pitch their solutions to decision-makers in the logistics sector in September each year and thus get direct access to experts and potential customers.

Start-in Factory

The Start-in Factory helps SMEs with the digital transformation process. Measures are taken here to establish where in the digitisation phase a company currently finds itself and which steps are necessary to guide the plans to success. An ecosystem made up of innovation coaches, a co-working space, research laboratories, a testing infrastructure and various workshops and exclusive events are available to the companies.
