With a focus on energy, mobility and production, the Hub sets cross-industry standards for sustainable problem solving. At the same time, there is an emphasis on joint research activities involving established players and ambitious company founders. Backers of the Digital Hub Karlsruhe include the FZI, the DIZ and the CyberForum. Start-ups in the field of AI are offered support in the form of mentoring, coaching and the provision of workspaces. In addition, the Hub’s AI radar provides an overview of the latest AI trends and application areas. The Digital Hub Karlsruhe wishes to use this extensive range of services to make such a complex and pioneering subject easier to grasp and more accessible, including to those outside the industry.

Best Cases of the Hub

apic.ai

The Karlsruhe-based start-up apic.ai has set itself the goal of preserving biodiversity. AI is used to gather data which in turn can be used to investigate the causes of declining insect numbers. Eurofins is the world's market leader in ecotoxicological services. While searching for a precise instrument to record plummeting bee numbers as a consequence of the spraying of pesticides, it came across apic.ai at the end of 2018. Since then, both companies have already conducted several pilot experiments with honey bees and bumblebees. The networking came about via the CyberLab at the Digital Hub Karlsruhe.

Medicalvalues

Medicalvalues, a start-up from Karlsruhe, is developing an AI-based diagnostic support system for doctors. To do so, they are not only relying on the artificial generation of knowledge by means of machine learning, but also on existing research knowledge from guidelines and scientific publications. This makes it possible to provide accurate and comprehensible diagnosis suggestions.  The start-up is currently conducting pilot projects with university hospitals and licensed laboratories. The Hub’s accelerator programme is providing support in the form of targeted coaching, mentoring and advice as well as its network and workspaces.

preML

The start-up preML from the Black Forest develops systems for identifying concrete cracks using computer vision algorithms and AI. The identification system is designed for the visual inspection of precast concrete elements. The use of normal industrial cameras makes the system cost-effective to use. The Digital Hub Karlsruhe is supporting the project by linking the relevant contacts.

Innovation Programs of the Hub

CyberLab Accelerator

The CyberLab Accelerator offers start-ups an intensive three-month period of training, during which their business model is examined and revised in conjunction with experts and mentors. Together risks are minimised and a long-term market orientation is worked on, potentially leading to eligibility for up to €200,000 from the Start-up BW Pre-Seed Programme, which provides support in the early phases.

It’s AI Match!

It‘s AI Match brings together start-ups, experts, researchers and those with an interest in AI to develop and apply innovative solutions. The Digital Hub Karlsruhe particularly helps small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are still at the start of their AI journey, but also more advanced companies that are seeking new ideas or partners from the field of research as well as practice-based settings for their AI projects.
