On the road to safety: Bavaria and the greater Munich region have been important centres at the heart of the automotive and insurance industries for a number of decades. That is why the Digital Hub Munich is connecting the insurtech and mobility sectors and trying to best meet the challenges of these industries, which are currently experiencing radical change, by using existing resources and expertise.
Bavaria is at the heart of the insurance and automotive industries. So it is only logical that the Digital Hub Munich has set itself the task of connecting the two. The backers can provide a wide range of services in both sectors: from accelerators, incubators and innovation programmes to implementation platforms, hackathons and awards, both Hubs are continuously working on innovative mobility solutions and insurance models adapted to them.
It is all about the future of mobility at Digital Hub Mobility Munich. Sustainable solutions are produced in conjunction with mobility and technology companies, municipalities, start-ups and the world of science. Digital products are developed and new mobility concepts are tested by networking important players. Digital Hub Mobility is based at UnternehmerTUM, Europe's biggest centre for start-ups and innovation, and uses this ecosystem to drive innovation for future-oriented mobility. In addition, the Hub offers programmes in the form of the Digital Mobility Lab and citizen mobility in which international and interdisciplinary teams work on the challenges associated with a rapidly changing mobility sector.
Faces behind the Hub
Team ANT.SPOT: an app for optimising the flow of traffic
A project team made up of talent from all over the world got together with the City of Hamburg to develop a digital application that improves the local flow of traffic. The starting point and challenge for the project were congested streets caused by delivery vehicles parked on the street. Such traffic offences can now be better detected with the aid of the digital solution and taken into consideration by the logistics companies when planning their routes.
citizen mobility UMPARKEN experiment
For a period of four weeks, eight households swap their cars for a mobility budget of €300 and switch to multimodal solutions. The parking spaces that are freed up as a result are then redesigned for an alternative use for the benefit of the residents. The pilot project – in which citizens, municipalities, science, business and start-ups participated – provided key insights into the potential and challenges of multimodal mobility and life without a car.
Digital Product School
The Digital Product School is a course that empowers those interested in finding digital solutions to real-world problems. The program allows participants to learn from experts and mentors with years of experience. Interaction designers, software engineers, artificial intelligence engineers, and product managers from around the world work together across disciplines to create products in an efficient and agile way.
citizen mobility is the implementation platform of Digital Hub Mobility. This is where partner companies, start-ups and municipalities work together to produce solutions for the mobility of the future. Urban experiments and pilot projects are conducted in interdisciplinary teams, generating relevant insights for the future-proof, citizen-centred mobility of tomorrow.
The InsurTech Hub Munich is working on the future digital viability of the insurance sector. The Hub boasts a broad network of notable partners from the world of insurance and promotes strong cooperation for the innovation of disruptive solutions for the sector. To this end, numerous innovation concepts are created for players in business and industry, science and the start-up scene. These include training opportunities for young entrepreneurs as well as various theme-based matchmaking programmes, which find suitable mentors for start-ups in the seed and series A phase.

Allianz and AirDoctor
The Israeli-based start-up AirDoctor has a global network of local doctors in over 60 countries. Using the healthcare app, travellers can quickly and easily make an appointment locally and do not have to pay in advance thanks to direct billing. Allianz became aware of the start-up in 2020 via the InsurTech Hub innovation programme and now offers the solution to its customers as an integrated service.
Fusionbase and Nürnberger Versicherung
The start-up Fusionbase offers access to over 1,000 external data sets, which it produces for automotive manufacturers and insurers for evaluation. Nürnberger Versicherung became aware of Fusionbase via the InsureTech Hub’s innovation programme while searching for a solution for accessing external data for claims management. As a result of having extensive access to the data, Nürnberger Versicherung can now better calculate risks and develop new insurance solutions on this basis.
